Musings in the Park. I was not a regular morning or evening walker, but ever since a friend urged me to take a break from my sedentary life, I have started going to the neighborhood park. At first, such forays were largely sporadic, but gradually, the pleasing green ambience stole my heart.  Pehaps it was in my imagination, but the well kept plants and flowers started to nod in sympathy at my starter struggles to keep up with the early birds. Encouraged by their tacit approval, I slowly became more regular in my walks.Since I keep my self busy in the mornings, running errands and household chores, the evening schedule  of walks better suited my inclination. Many walkers in the park, who befriended me, extolled the greater glories of morning walks. They spoke of fresh air, oxygen being generated in the mornings, not to forget the morning glories of the sun rise....

Finding Happiness,

Happiness Comes only by Sharing Happiness.  A professor gave a balloon to every student, who had to inflate it, write their name on it and throw it in the hallway. The professor then mixed all the balloons. The students were then given 5 minutes to find their own balloon.  Despite a hectic search, no one found their balloon. At that point, the professor told the students to take the first balloon that they found and hand it to the person whose name was written on it. Within 5 minutes, everyone had their own balloon. The professor said to the students: "These balloons are like happiness. We will never find it if everyone is looking for their own. But if we care about other people's happiness, we'll find ours too."
Musings on Drinking Coffee with Old Friends. Today, drinking coffee with 2 old friends from my old school, St.John's, was not only like opening a gateway to old memories but also getting a window into their lives after school. Time had not still for any of us, and we had devised various ways and means to not only earn our livelihoods, but also to earn our spurs. But that will have to wait to be judged by others. One old friend had written critically acclaimed historical fiction books. One book had the distinction of a foreword by William Dalyrimple, who is himself a prolific and acclaimed best selling historical fiction author. The other old friend had migrated  to UK after school, and had been in the forefront of  race relations in that country. He had opened one of the earliest such counselling centers in UK.        Then he had served as a BBC Governor, and on the Judicial Appointments Commission. He had not let his visually challenged statu...
Happiness in 4 Words.  By Warren Buffett. Warren Buffett   gave one of his best   lectures  to students at the University of Florida's school of business over two decades ago. As it happened, one of the MBA students popped Buffett a question, asking the billionaire what he would do to live a happier life if he could start all over again. Buffett's  response? He's held an enduring level of happiness for decades, but he was quick to turn the focus back on the students by urging them to make better choices around career goals, finances, health, and relationships. "The way to do it is to play out the game and do something you enjoy all your life," he said. "Be associated with people you like. I only work with people I like. If I could make $100 million with a guy who causes my stomach to churn, I'd say no." Buffett's happiness lesson in four words The biggest lesson on happiness from Buffett's speech stands the test of time and is especially...

Management Lessons.

We have been inundated with the messages about The Late Queen Elizabeth. And some have tried to draw management lessons from her life. But, without taking anything away from the such accolades and  Leadership Lessons from the life of The Queen of Great Britain, please take a moment to ponder on our own Desi, Homegrown, but equally valid Indian examples. The Taj staff gave up their lives to shield Taj guests on 26/11. And we were left wondering about the ethos and the corporate culture of the Taj, and the Tatas. Our Indian leaders, PMs and Presidents, and lesser well placed Indians, left memorable legacies in Leadership Lessons. Nirja Bhanot, Airhostess, defended the air passengers, at the cost of her Life . And went beyond the call of duty. The Incredible Indians TV series are eye opening. These are all showing Indians who raised the bar for themselves and the community, and left valuable imprints on the sands of time. Some Rajasthani rulers, were courageous and outstanding l...
